About Guest Blogger Laurel Wider
Laurel Wider is the creator of Wonder Crew — dolls inspired by boys. As a mother to a son and a psychotherapist, Wider believed it was time to move beyond gender stereotypes and address the developmental needs of the whole child. Wonder Crew brings nurturing, connection and kindness to boys’ play by combining the adventure of an action figure with the emotional connection of a favorite stuffed animal. Through a Successful Kickstarter campaign in March 2014, Wonder Crew launched and has since found it’s way across the country while gaining national recognition: Wider was a keynote speaker at The White House conference, “Breaking Down Gender Stereotypes in Media and Toys so that Our Children Can Explore, Learn and Dream Without Limits” as well as interviewed on PBS and featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Upworthy, The Atlantic, Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post and Parent’s Magazine. Wonder Crew’s aim is to empower all kids to see themselves as connected, creative, strong individuals with the ability to go anywhere and be anything. Wider graduated from NYU in 2003 and has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 12 years, with specialties in gender, relationships and identity formation.
