Founded in 2000, Geocaching HQ is dedicated to inspiring and enabling discovery, exploration, and adventure through a unique combination of outdoor recreation and location-based technology. The game’s passionate community use the Geocaching® app and GPS-enabled devices to find cleverly hidden containers called geocaches and share their experiences with others. Today, there are millions of players and more than three million geocaches in over 190 countries.
Here’s how it works: A geocache is located at a specific set of coordinates and stays there for people to find. Once you find a geocache, open it up and sign the logbook. You may discover some trade or swag items (small toys, key chains, trinkets or trackables) inside the cache. The general rule of thumb is if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value. Then, place the container back exactly how you found it and share your experience online with the rest of the geocaching community. Some trackables have missions of their own – it may want to go to the Space Needle in Seattle, the pyramids in Egypt, or all the National Parks. A geocacher will attempt to move the trackable to a geocache closer to its destination, all the while the trackable gets logged and accumulates stories and pictures from the geocachers who have moved it. Trackables can come in all shapes and sizes, in fact over 600 geocachers have trackable tattoos!
Geocaching is more than just an outdoor treasure hunting game played by over 15 million people around the world – it’s also a digital, tangible and measurable marketing solution that gets people outside. Geocaching promotions empower meaningful story-worthy moments through experiential marketing and brand awareness campaigns.
One way to tell your brand, organization or product’s story in a unique and engaging way is to partner with Geocaching HQ on a trackable promotion. Trackable promotions offer a customized marketing package with branded trackable tags that tell a story. Geocachers go wild for these one of a kind trackables and like to show them off as bragging rights on social media and at geocaching events.
Just like the game of geocaching, Geocaching HQ is full of surprises. So, what’s next for Geocaching HQ?
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Trails System Act, which established a national network of trails, including the Appalachian Trail, Geocaching partnered with the U.S. Forest Service and Ad Council’s the Discover the Forest campaign to create custom trackables.
Visit geocaching.com/DiscoverTheForest to learn more about the promotion and request a limited-edition Discover the Forest trackable.
Once the trackables are delivered to their lucky recipients (hopefully you, dear reader), geocachers will experience all that America’s trails have to offer and search for one of the 1,500 limited-edition Discover the Forest trackables hidden in geocaches across the country, sharing their adventures with #DiscovertheForest!
If you’re looking for more opportunities for exploration after locating a trackable, visit DiscovertheForest.org to find a trail or park near you. You and your family can then reconnect with nature by experiencing it first-hand!
