On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War I officially ended. Ninety-nine years later, we continue to honor American veterans by reflecting on their service and sacrifice. This Veterans Day, see how the advertising community salutes those who served with these 7 heart-warming (and tear-jerking) commercials.
Veterans Day 2017 (Love Has No Labels)
In honor of Veterans Day, the Ad Council’s own Love Has No labels released a new video that features veterans and service members from various backgrounds to show the many faces of the military. By exposing viewers to different veterans’ and service members’ stories, viewers are encouraged to walk away with the message that to revere service is to revere all veterans, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, religion, age or ability.
#VeteransDay Thank You For Everything 2017 (YouTube)
YouTube’s 2017 Veterans Day ad is a roller coaster of emotions. A compilation of home footage and video testimonials, the ad transports viewers to the line of fire and showcases the challenges veterans face both during and after duty. Beyond thanking veterans for their service, this ad thanks them for sharing their stories –good, bad, and everything in between – and sends a clear message that we as a nation are listening.
Military Commitment: Ask Better Questions (Starbucks)
In an effort to change the conversation around veterans, Starbucks’ 2017 ad tackles the stigmas surrounding military service by having vets interview each other. These revealing interviews highlight the diverse roles and experiences of service men and women and underscore their importance in the modern workforce.
Empty Chair (Guinness)
Guinness’ 2014 Empty Chair commercial may just be my favorite Veterans Day ad to date. Set in the interior of an average pub, the ad offers a touching tribute to our armed forces through – what else – a frothy pint of Guinness.
Veterans Day 2007 (Boeing)
Real stories from veterans of all ages, races, genders, and conflicts, give Boeing’s 2007 commercial a deeply personal feel. The ad’s unwavering facial closeups makes a clear statement to veterans: we see you, we hear you, and we honor you today and every day.
Putting Them First (American Airlines)
Unlike Boeing’s compilation of stories, American Airlines’ “Putting Them First” spot follows the journey of a single vet across a bustling airport. Through interactions big and small, the commercial captures the many ways we express our gratitude for the armed services.
Thanks for the Outdoors (Cabela’s)
In Cabela’s 2016 Veterans Day commercial, the outdoor retailer thanks veterans for protecting America’s great outdoors. Featuring NFL great Brett Favre, the ad joins adventurers in their natural habitats, connecting our freedom to explore the American landscape with the service of troops worldwide.
