Sam Senser is a 19-year-old Nebraska native who won the 2015 Project Yellow Light competition last year. His win came along with the top prize of $5,000 dollars and his short anti-texting and driving film was made into an Ad Council PSA. Check it out below (it’s pretty awesome).
Sam’s PSA was so good that the Ad Council decided to pick up the tab on a round trip ticket from Nebraska to New York City, as well as a ticket for him to attend our Annual Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on November 11th (we brought Sam’s parents along too). It was an incredible night that included a surprise shout-out from the host, Joel McHale, and a spotlight on Sam in his spiffy tuxedo.
We wanted to ask Sam a few questions about his creative method, his favorite director and what he thought of the dinner!
Meet Sam Senser
Ad Council: What’s your favorite movie?
Sam Senser: My Cousin Vinny
AC: What’s something that always makes you laugh?
SS: Dry humor, I usually don’t like overacting. (Jim Carey is an exception)
AC: Favorite TV Show?
SS: Friends and Game of Thrones
On the Project Yellow Light Competition
AC: What was your inspiration for your video?
SS: I heard about the PSA contest from my teachers. It was tough to come up with an idea, but eventually my dad suggested the deer should be in the car, and the idea snowballed from there.
AC: How long did it take you to make it?
SS: It took one night to film and about a day to edit.
AC: What advice would you give to future PYL applicants?
SS: Don’t worry too much about equipment; spend most of your time trying to find the right idea. That’s what it’s all about.
On the Ad Council annual dinner
AC: What did you think of the dinner?
SS: Overwhelming (but great). Very very big. It was bigger than I expected.
AC: Favorite part of the evening?
SS: Getting a shout out and standing up in front of everyone getting recognized, meeting Julie Garner from Project Yellow Light, Elena Korn from the Ad Council, and walking around at the after party getting to meet lots of people.
AC: Who did you sit with/talk to at the dinner?
SS: I sat at the table of “Creators for Good” with some YouTubers. I talked to the creators of the channel Fine Brothers. I also talked with some AdCouncil members, and people from large ad agencies including Vevo.
Sam is still working his film magic on a new project called Vanman & Truckboy – the Great Bank Debacle. Watch the trailer here and learn more about Sam’s work at www.senserfilms.com
