For most people, food poisoning is not a favorite topic. That’s why we’ve used a range of tactics to raise the issue of foodborne illness in our Food Safety campaign. The latest of these tactics is humor.
Our new web series Recipes for Disaster features Maria who “does everything wrong.” The PSAs in this series offer a range of simple but important food tips through stories that are both amusing and relatable. Our goal is to grab people’s attention without turning their stomachs.
The first PSA in our series, “Bacteria BBQ” features Maria as an overly-enthusiastic chef who prepares a barbeque for her neighbors using old (and risky) family recipes. As the outdoor party progresses, we learn the unfortunate fate of each of Maria’s dinner guests who fall victim to food poisoning due to her harmful food preparation practices. The end goal, of course, is to make food safety a part of every new “family recipe.”
We came across a few other examples of people using humor to spread the word about food safety. University of California Davis professor Carl Winters created several hilarious songs to promote safe food preparation. Check them out below:
“Microbes Medley” (to the tune of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions”)
“Stomachache Tonight” (to the tune of The Eagles’ “Heartache Tonight”)
The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority also created these cute little spots to show that it only takes a few seconds to prepare food properly.
