Social Media Week: A Guide for Good

Written by Amanda Lehner | 5:34 pm

SMWNYC

Social Media Week kickoffs this Monday in nine cities across the globe (February 7 – 11 in New York, London, São Paulo, Toronto, San Francisco, Rome, ParisIstanbul, and Hong Kong) . Nonprofits and Government Agency attendees will be happy to know “social media for social good” is a big theme.

With over 150 events in 9 content hubs around New York City, plus my full time job, I’ve resigned to the fact that I can’t do it all. So I’ve pulled events from each day for a quick #SMWNYC guide for good.

But before you have a look at that, I want to shamelessly promote my panel on “Responding to Suicide and Digital Abuse”  Wednesday, February 9th 3:00pm at the Paley Center for Media #smvprevent. My friends from Jed Foundation, MTV, It Gets Better and Lifeline will discuss how you can keep your social sites safe and what you can do if someone says they’re in crisis on your site. In sum, what you learn at this panel could help to save a life. Hope to see you there.

If you can’t make it to the week’s events, you can virtually attend. Check in to http://socialmediaweek.org/ for livestream links. Also, every panel has been assigned a hashtag and Nokia put together a very useful application to track via Twitter.

Register for the events here, they’re free!

If any of the events are full but you really want to go, I’d stop by anyways to see if there’s room as not all who registered will show. Especially if another snowpocalypse comes our way.
